BAT Self-Perform Updates
A group of community members made public comments directly to the Board of Commissioners at their meeting on the 17th. Like the STIF committee meeting on March 2nd, the comments were opposed to the County continuing to consider the possibility of building an in-house special transportation program. Speakers asked many of the same questions that came up at the STIF meeting:
· Given that client satisfaction with Dial-A-Bus is extremely high, why is Public Works suggesting not renewing the special transportation contract?
· Projected staffing costs for an in-house program are $2.3 million. Dial-A-Bus is currently paid $984,000 for staffing. How is this responsible use of taxpayer dollars?
· Current service levels need to be expanded in order to meet client demand. Why would Public Works not use the increased funding to solve this problem?
Benton County has created the following webpage as a place where information about the Self-Perform Analysis and FAQs have been posted: https://pw.bentoncountyor.gov/benton-area-transit-service-delivery/

Many clients and stakeholders have written letters and emails to the commissioners supporting Dial-A-Bus. The next Commissioners meeting is on April 7th. Several clients have already asked for rides to this meeting to keep this issue squarely in front of the Board. If you would like to attend, and need help with transportation, please call dispatch to make arrangements.
STIF Meeting - March 2
More than 50 clients, volunteers, and other stakeholders attended the STIF meeting on March 2nd to share opinions on Benton County continuing a self-perform analysis for creating an in-house transportation program that would end their contract with Dial-A-Bus. Public comment was unanimously against the County proposal and lasted about an hour. You can view the public comment portion of the meeting here:
When public comment ended, the first action taken by the STIF committee was to pass a motion advising Benton County not to put any further resources toward the in-house proposal.
Despite all of the opposition, Benton County will continue work on this proposal. You can view the rest of the meeting here using the following passcode: 3e!&K^2b

Dial-A-Bus Expands Ride Availability for Seniors and People with Disabilities
Benton County March 2025 – Dial-A-Bus is proud to announce expansion of its ride services beyond those it provides as contractor for Benton Area Transit (BAT).
This initiative eliminates service reductions caused by funding shortfalls in recent years and recognizes the growing demand for safe, reliable, accessible transportation. Dial-A-Bus has enhanced its scheduling and capacity to accommodate more riders, ensuring that all qualified community members have access to essential services, medical appointments, social engagements, and other vital activities. This expansion is possible because of the dedicated commitment by Dial-A-Bus staff and volunteers to the mobility of those who need it most.
“We understand the critical role transportation plays in maintaining independence and quality of life,” said Dial-A-Bus Director Steve Harder. The expanded service will allow more flexibility for scheduling rides, reducing wait times, and improving overall accessibility. “Dial-A-Bus remains dedicated to providing door-to-door service with trained drivers who prioritize passenger safety and comfort,” said Kelly Brown, president of the Dial-A-Bus Board of Directors.
Community members who are eligible for Dial-A-Bus services are encouraged to schedule their rides in advance to take advantage of the increased availability. Dial-A-Bus also encourages good drivers to volunteer. Volunteer drivers are essential to maintaining Dial-A-Bus’ excellent service. Volunteers may serve a regular schedule or occasionally drive a few hours at their convenience.
